On the January 2 edition of Raw, Chris Jericho returned to WWE. He made it clear that he wanted to reclaim his title as the "best in the world," which CM Punk had claimed to be since winning the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank 2011. Punk defeated Jericho at WrestleMania XXVIII , but since then, Jericho has attacked Punk several times, including pouring a bottle of Jack Daniel's over him before smashing it on the back of his head—a pointed insult to Punk, who is well-known as straight edge both inside and outside the ring. On the April 16 edition of Raw, Jericho announced that he will face Punk in a Chicago Street Fight at Extreme Rules for the WWE Championship.

John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar Match at WWE Extreme Rules 2012 Online
Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis proclaimed Brock Lesnar is the new “face of WWE.” Not if John Cena has something to say about it! Lesnar turned the WWE Universe upside down when he returned to WWE on the April 2 edition of Raw SuperShow and immediately targeted Cena with a devastating F-5. The Cenation leader didn’t back down the following week on Raw and responded with an emphatic slap that triggered a near-uncontrollable brawl and left Cena with a busted lip. Little did Cena know he’d later be taking another ride in the whirlwind of the F-5, proving that Lesnar is not only intent on establishing himself as the most dominant WWE Superstar; he wants to dish out punishment every chance he gets, too.
Coming off a very close loss to The Rock at WrestleMania, Cena will surely be looking to make a powerful statement in what could be the most physically demanding battle of his career. And judging by Brock’s recent unpredictable attacks, there’s no telling what he’s capable of doing on the one night of the year when the entire WWE throws out the rulebook.

WWE Extreme Rules is a professional wrestling event produced annually by WWE, a Connecticut–based promotion, and broadcast live and available only through pay-per-view (PPV). The name of the event stems from term "Extreme Rules," which WWE uses to refer to its bouts that are contested under hardcore wrestling regulations; defunct–Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) originally used the term to describe the regulations for all of its bouts. The event name was established in 2009; however, its theme began with its predecessor, One Night Stand (est. 2005), which was promoted originally as an ECW reunion show. After two years, WWE promoted the show as one of its own regular PPV events and kept the ECW concept of Extreme Rules matches. In 2009, WWE renamed the One Night Stand event to WWE Extreme Rules. The 2009 Extreme Rules event was noted by WWE to be a direct continuation of the One Night Stand chronology. However, the 2010 event was later promoted as only the second event under a new chronology, one that is no longer a direct continuation of the One Night Stand event. In 2010, the event was rescheduled to April, moving from June and replacing Backlash in its slot.
